Atlanta and the New South

Where the tour begins. In 1906 Atlanta was a railroad and industrial city of roughly 115,000 people that had grown tenfold since Union troops left it in ruins four decades earlier. Henry Grady had sold the country on a “New South” — modern, commercial, reconciled. The massacre would be measured against that story, and would damage it more than any other single event.
