Decatur Street

Decatur Street was the city’s Black commercial and nightlife district — restaurants, saloons, and the dives the newspapers had spent the summer describing as the source of the city’s moral decay. It was singled out in print before it was attacked in fact.

At about nine in the evening on 22 September, a group of young men attacked a Black bicycle messenger here. That was the beginning.
